Approach

The work is photojournalistic first and unapologetically cinematic: pictures that are romantic and still built to be looked at. Kanayo works a day rather than arranging it, waiting on the moment that is already happening and finding the angle nobody else is standing at.

It is a deliberately environmental way of shooting. The lines of a building, the texture of a wall, a pattern thrown across the floor by a window: whatever is already there becomes the frame, which is why no two weddings here resolve the same way.

He came to it side on, learning composition and processing as a street photographer before any of this was the job. That work has run in the Baltimore Sun and the Bureau of Arts and Culture; the weddings since have appeared in Rangefinder, Munaluchi Bridal, Junebug Weddings, The Knot, BET Lifestyle and Washingtonian.
